Asbestos abatement and hazardous material removal in Courtenay

We test the building, remove and dispose of what's found under our WorkSafeBC asbestos abatement licence, and clear it before the rest of the crew starts work. Asbestos-containing material goes to the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre at its own disposal rate.

The WorkSafeBC rule

Since January 1, 2024, WorkSafeBC has required asbestos abatement contractors to hold an abatement licence to operate in BC. We hold that WorkSafeBC asbestos abatement licence.

Why we test instead of guess

Asbestos was widely used in BC building materials until the early 1990s, but a building's age isn't proof either way — WorkSafeBC is clear that looking at a material won't tell you what's in it. Lab testing is the only way to know, and we test before we touch anything on a job where asbestos is a possibility.

How abatement fits into your job

   Testing — we test the material before any demolition or strip-out work starts nearby.

   Containment — if asbestos turns up, we seal off the area before removal starts.

   Removal and disposal — the material is removed under our licence and taken to the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre, where asbestos-containing material goes out at its own $310-a-tonne rate.

   Clearance — the area is cleared before the rest of the crew starts work around it.

What does this mean for your property?

Older homes across the region are the ones most likely to turn up asbestos — in flooring adhesive, popcorn ceiling texture, old pipe wrap or vermiculite insulation. We test as part of the quote on any older building, so abatement is priced in from the start.
